Founding Story

In 2018 we were four individuals leading interesting lives with family, friends, work and play. We were also four highly qualified and experienced career professionals volunteering our time and expertise to add value to the professionalism of the career field in New Zealand. We came together as a company because we observed much-needed change was occurring at a snail’s pace, and was not always informed by evidence. That didn’t fit with our way of doing things. In December 2018 we formed The Career Development Company to lead for positive change.

Our business focus is on our clients: to design and deliver solutions that enable individuals and organisations to thrive. However, we do things differently, and that’s something we celebrate. Although we hold fast to our core values, we embrace new ways of doing and being to find solutions that work in changing times. Our kaupapa was founded on giving the best of ourselves as volunteers, and forged by the knowledge that to support a greater number of individuals and organisations we needed to expand our reach. Fortuitously, our team members are based in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch.

Ultimately, a blend of for-profit and social enterprise was the right fit for us. We believe everyone has a career and that career development is a social justice issue- it should be a right for all to have access to quality career guidance rather than a privilege for the few. And career development must be viewed as a lifelong process.

Since the inception of The Career Development Company in 2018 our offer to individuals and organisations has expanded to include professional career services and professional supervision, programme design and delivery, presentations and workshops, technical writing, training and facilitation, research, business coaching and mentoring, and organisational consulting.

Our Whakataukī

Our original idea has grown into a serious business, but we still have a lot of laughs and the message remains the same. Our mission is to connect, collaborate, design and deliver solutions for individuals and organisations to thrive, and to add value to advance a socially just New Zealand. To represent those elements we chose the whakataukī (Maori proverb): Ma whero ma pango ka oti ai te mahi – With red and with black the work is completed.

Proverbs play a vital role within cultures for maintaining language and historical understandings. As a New Zealand company with Te Tiriti o Waitangi (The Treaty of Waitangi) as a guiding document, we looked for a whakataukī that speaks to the vision, values and services of The Career Development Company.

Our chosen whakataukī refers to co-operation: if everyone does their part, the work will be complete. The emphasis is on the advantage of work and of working together (sharing the workload including leadership and communal effort) no matter what the nature of the work (to hasten the completion of a task). We see this as relevant to the network of support each client needs on their career journey, as well as for the shifts that are needed for career development at a Government/policy level, for the professionalism of our industry, and within workplaces. We love the extra dimension working in The CDC team has brought to our interesting individual lives.

The colours refer to the traditional kōwhaiwhai patterns (painted scroll ornamentation) on the inside of meeting houses. The spiral, or koru, is a prominent feature in kōwhaiwhai patterns, with red and black the traditional colours. It represents the new unfurling frond of the ponga (silver tree-fern endemic to New Zealand and a symbol we associate with New Zealand).

You’ll see the whakataukī reflected in our vision statement, our waiata, our colour palette, in the images we have chosen for our website, and most importantly- in our way of doing things at The CDC.
